Asking for Directions
Lost in a German town? These are the exact words you need.
With strangers on the street you use Sie (formal). Always open with Entschuldigung (excuse me) — it's the polite way to get someone's attention.
Where is the station?
Formal (Sie) — asking a passer-by for the way.
Du
Entschuldigung, wo ist der Bahnhof?
Excuse me, where is the train station?
Passant
Gehen Sie geradeaus und dann die erste Straße links.
Go straight ahead and then take the first street on the left.
Du
Ist es weit?
Is it far?
Passant
Nein, nur fünf Minuten zu Fuß.
No, just five minutes on foot.
Du
Vielen Dank!
Thank you very much!
Good to know — the direction words: geradeaus (straight ahead), links (left), rechts (right), zu Fuß (on foot). To ask "how do I get to…?" say Wie komme ich zum/zur …? (zum + maskulin/neutrum, zur + feminin).
Looking for a shop
Formal (Sie) — you can't find a specific place.
Du
Entschuldigung, ich suche eine Apotheke.
Excuse me, I'm looking for a pharmacy.
Frau
Die nächste Apotheke ist um die Ecke, neben dem Supermarkt.
The nearest pharmacy is around the corner, next to the supermarket.
Du
Super, danke schön!
Great, thank you!
Frau
Bitte schön!
You're welcome!
Good to know: um die Ecke (around the corner), neben (next to), gegenüber (opposite). "Danke schön" → "Bitte schön" is the standard thanks-and-you're-welcome pair. If you didn't catch it, say Können Sie das bitte wiederholen? (Can you repeat that, please?).
