Vocab: Nature — B2

Nature vocabulary at B2 level.

Maskulin Feminin Neutrum Plural

der Öko — environmentalist, eco-conscious person; organic or ecological product or business

Öko is colloquial and may be neutral, friendly, or mildly mocking depending on the context. For a neutral description, umweltbewusste Person is safer; Öko can also describe an organic product in informal compounds such as Öko-Laden.
Der Öko fährt jeden Tag mit dem Fahrrad.
The eco-conscious person cycles every day.
fährt means travels or rides, jeden Tag means every day, and mit dem Fahrrad means by bicycle. Der Öko is nominative because it is the subject, while mit takes the dative in dem Fahrrad.
Ich kenne den Öko aus dem Bioladen.
I know the eco-conscious person from the organic shop.
kenne means know, aus means from, and der Bioladen is an organic shop. Den Öko is accusative because it is the object of kennen; aus dem Bioladen is dative because aus requires the dative.
Ich helfe dem Öko beim Tragen.
I help the eco-conscious person carry things.
helfe means help, and beim Tragen means while carrying things. Dem Öko is dative because helfen takes a dative person; beim is short for bei dem, also dative.
Das Fahrrad des Ökos steht vor dem Haus.
The eco-conscious person's bicycle is in front of the house.
das Fahrrad means bicycle, steht means is standing or is located, and vor dem Haus means in front of the house. Des Ökos is genitive because it shows possession, and the genitive ending -s is added to this masculine noun.
Viele Ökos kaufen regionale Lebensmittel.
Many environmentally conscious people buy locally produced food.
viele means many, regionale Lebensmittel means locally produced food, and kaufen means buy. Ökos is plural with viele; regionale Lebensmittel is accusative because it is the object of kaufen.
Wir kaufen heute Öko im Supermarkt.
We are buying organic products at the supermarket today.
heute means today, kaufen means buy, and im Supermarkt means at the supermarket. Here Öko is an informal mass-like object with no article; the finite verb kaufen stands in position two.
Der neue Öko-Laden verkauft Seife ohne Plastik.
The new organic shop sells soap without plastic.
der neue Laden means the new shop, verkauft means sells, and Seife ohne Plastik means soap without plastic. In Öko-Laden, Öko is the first part of a compound and does not receive an article of its own; ohne takes the accusative.
