allgemein — general ​

Also used adverbially: im Allgemeinen = "in general." Related noun: die Allgemeinheit = "the general public."

das Alphabet — alphabet ​

Plural: die Alphabete. The German alphabet has 26 base letters plus ä, ö, ü, and ß.

alt — old ​

Irregular comparative: alt → älter → am ältesten. Collocation: der alte Kamerad = "the old pal/buddy" (Kamerad = comrade, companion).

alt = old · wie = how. The standard way to ask someone's age in German.
Ich liebe alte Filme aus den dreißiger Jahren.
I like old movies from the 1930s.

das Alter — age ​

Usually used only in the singular for a person's age — the rarer plural "die Alter" means something closer to "the ages/eras," as in "in verschiedenen Altern" (across different ages).
Nom Das Alter spielt hier keine Rolle.
Age doesn't matter here.
das Alter (neutrum) = age · keine Rolle spielen = to not matter/play no role. "Das" — neutrum Nominativ. Alter is the subject.

die Ameise — ant ​

Plural: die Ameisen. The dictionary's own example uses the bare plural for a general statement: "Ameisen sind fleißige Insekten." (Ants are hard-working insects.)
Nom Die Ameise trägt ein Blatt.

Amerika — America ​

Like most place names, "Amerika" is used without an article. Compound derivatives: Nordamerika = North America, Mittelamerika = Central America, Südamerika = South America — all article-free too.
Nom Amerika ist groß.
America is big.
Amerika = America · groß = big. No article needed — Amerika is the subject directly.
Dat Viele Menschen in Amerika haben Vorfahren aus Europa.
Many people in America have ancestors from Europe.
viele = many · der Vorfahre = ancestor · aus = from (+ Dativ). "In Amerika" is Dativ (location) — no article needed for a continent/country name.
Akk Sie besucht Amerika zum ersten Mal.
She is visiting America for the first time.
besuchen = to visit · zum ersten Mal = for the first time. No article/ending change — Akkusativ looks the same as Nominativ.

der Amerikaner — American (person) ​

Feminine form: die Amerikanerin (plural die Amerikanerinnen). The masculine plural is unchanged: die Amerikaner.
Nom Der Amerikaner spricht gut Deutsch.
The American speaks German well.

Akk Wir kennen den Amerikaner schon lange.

amerikanisch — American (adj.) ​

The adjective form of Amerika — lowercase, unlike the noun der Amerikaner. Compare: deutsch/Deutscher, französisch/Franzose.
Amerikanische Musik ist in der ganzen Welt populär.
American music is popular around the world.
amerikanisch = American · die Welt = world · populär = popular. Attributive adjective before a feminine singular noun with no article takes the ending -e.

sich amüsieren — to amuse oneself / have fun ​

Almost always reflexive: sich amüsieren = "to have fun / amuse oneself." Related adjective: amüsant = "amusing, fun" — er ist amüsant = "he's fun to be around."
Die Kinder amüsieren sich am Strand.
The children are amusing themselves at the beach.
sich amüsieren = to have fun/amuse oneself · der Strand = beach. Reflexive verb — the reflexive pronoun "sich" agrees with the plural subject "die Kinder."

an — at; on ​

A two-way (Wechselpräposition) preposition: Dativ for static location (wo? — an der Wand), Akkusativ for direction (wohin? — an die Wand hängen).
Das Bild hängt an der Wand.
The picture hangs on the wall.
hängen = to hang · die Wand = wall. Static location (wo?) → Dativ: "an der Wand."
Sie hängt das Bild an die Wand.
She hangs the picture on the wall.
hängen here means "to hang (something) up" — a motion verb. Direction (wohin?) → Akkusativ: "an die Wand."

die Ananas — pineapple ​

Plural: die Ananas (unchanged — a loanword that adds no ending). The dictionary's own example uses the bare form: "Auf Hawaii pflanzt man Ananas an." (They grow pineapples in Hawaii.)
Nom Die Ananas schmeckt süß und sauer.
The pineapple tastes sweet and sour.
die Ananas (feminin) = pineapple · schmecken = to taste · süß = sweet · sauer = sour. "Die" — feminin Nominativ. Ananas is the subject.
Akk Ich schneide die Ananas in Stücke.

der Koch = chef/cook · mit = with (+ Dativ) · reif = ripe. Plural Dativ: the adjective takes -en (reifen), but Ananas itself is invariable and adds no -n like most plurals do.

anbieten — to offer ​

Separable verb: ich biete an, du bietest an, er/sie bietet an. Past participle: angeboten.
Herr Peters bietet uns ein Geschenk an.
Mr. Peters is offering us a present.
anbieten = to offer (separable: bietet … an) · uns = us (Dativ) · das Geschenk = present/gift.

andere, -r, -s — other ​

Declines like a regular adjective. As a pronoun it stands alone ("das andere" = "the other one"); as an adjective it modifies a noun ("ein anderes Buch" = "another book").
Dieses Buch gehört mir; das andere gehört dir.
This book is mine; the other is yours.
andere = other · gehören = to belong (+ Dativ) · mir = to me · dir = to you. Used here as a pronoun standing in for "das andere Buch."

ändern — to change ​

Regular verb: ich ändere, du änderst, er/sie ändert. Reflexive "sich ändern" = "to change (itself)," e.g. "Das Wetter ändert sich."
Er ändert immer seine Meinung.
He always changes his opinion.
ändern = to change · immer = always · die Meinung = opinion.

anfangen, er fängt an — to begin / to start ​

Separable, stem-changing: ich fange an, du fängst an, er/sie fängt an, wir fangen an, ihr fangt an, sie fangen an.
Um wieviel Uhr fängt der Film an?
What time does the movie begin?
anfangen = to begin (separable, stem change a → ä) · der Film = movie · um wieviel Uhr = at what time.

der Anfang — beginning ​

Plural: die Anfänge (umlaut + -e). Common phrase: am Anfang = "at the beginning," used constantly in stories and instructions.
Nom Der Anfang ist immer schwer.
The beginning is always hard.
der Anfang (maskulin) = beginning · immer = always · schwer = hard/difficult. "Der" — maskulin Nominativ. Anfang is the subject.
Akk Ich mag den Anfang des Films.
I like the beginning of the movie.

anfassen — to touch ​

Separable verb: ich fasse an, du fasst an. Often used as a warning: "Nicht anfassen!" (Don't touch!)
Fass den Hund nicht an! Er beißt!
Don't touch the dog! He bites!
anfassen = to touch (separable: fasse … an) · der Hund = dog · beißen = to bite. The "du" imperative drops the -e ending: "fass … an!"

angeboren — natural / innate ​

Literally "born onto/into" (an + geboren, from gebären) — used for an inborn trait or talent.
Er hat ein angeborenes Talent für Musik.
He has a natural gift for music.
angeboren = natural/innate · das Talent = talent/gift · für = for (+ Akkusativ). Adjective takes the ending -es before a neuter Akkusativ noun with "ein."

die Angelegenheit — matter; business ​

Plural: die Angelegenheiten. Idiom: sich um seine eigenen Angelegenheiten kümmern = "to mind one's own business" (literally "to take care of one's own affairs").
Nom Die Angelegenheit ist kompliziert.
The matter is complicated.
die Angelegenheit (feminin) = matter/business · kompliziert = complicated. "Die" — feminin Nominativ. Angelegenheit is the subject.
Akk Wir besprechen die Angelegenheit morgen.
We'll discuss the matter tomorrow.
besprechen = to discuss · morgen = tomorrow. "Die" stays "die" in Akkusativ (feminin: die → die). Angelegenheit is the direct object.
Dat Der Anwalt hilft uns bei der Angelegenheit.

sprechen von = to talk about (+ Dativ) · wichtig = important. Plural Dativ: article "den"; Angelegenheiten already ends in -n.

angeln — to fish ​

Regular verb (drops the stem -e- in "ich": ich angle, du angelst). Fixed phrase: angeln gehen = "to go fishing."
Wir angeln gern im Sommer.
We like to fish in the summer.
angeln = to fish · gern = gladly/like to · der Sommer = summer.

angenehm — pleasant ​

Opposite: unangenehm = unpleasant. Also heard as a polite reply when meeting someone: "Angenehm!" (roughly "pleased to meet you").
Wir machten einen sehr angenehmen Spaziergang auf dem Lande.
We had a very pleasant walk in the country.
angenehm = pleasant · der Spaziergang = walk · auf dem Lande = in the country(side). Adjective takes the ending -en after "einen" (maskulin Akkusativ, direct object of "machen").

der Angestellte — employee ​

An "adjectival noun" — it declines like an adjective, not like a regular noun: der Angestellte / ein Angestellter (Nominativ), den/einen Angestellten (Akkusativ), dem/einem Angestellten (Dativ). Feminine: die Angestellte. Plural: die Angestellten. The dictionary's own example uses the bare plural with a number: "Die Gesellschaft hat zehn Angestellte." (The company has ten employees.)
Nom Der Angestellte kommt jeden Morgen pünktlich.
The employee arrives punctually every morning.
der Angestellte (maskulin) = employee · pünktlich = punctual/on time. "Der" — maskulin Nominativ, weak adjective ending -e. Angestellte is the subject.

Nom Ein Angestellter wartet vor der Tür.
An employee is waiting in front of the door.
warten = to wait · die Tür = door. Without a der-word, the adjectival noun takes the strong ending -er in Nominativ: "ein Angestellter," not "ein Angestellte."
Akk Wir suchen einen zuverlässigen Angestellten.
We are looking for a reliable employee.
suchen = to look for · zuverlässig = reliable. "Einen" — maskulin Akkusativ indefinite (ein → einen); the adjectival noun takes -en.
Dat Die Gesellschaft zahlt den Angestellten ein gutes Gehalt.
The company pays the employees a good salary.
die Gesellschaft = company · zahlen = to pay · das Gehalt = salary. Plural Dativ: article "den"; the adjectival noun plural also ends in -en → Angestellten.

die Angst — fear ​

Plural: die Ängste. Almost always used without an article in the idiom Angst haben = "to be afraid," and vor etwas Angst haben = "to be afraid of something" — the dictionary's own examples show this: "Ich habe Angst um mein Leben, wenn er fährt." (I fear for my life when he is driving.) and "Mein kleiner Bruder hat vor Spinnen Angst." (My little brother is frightened of spiders.)
Nom Die Angst ist ganz normal.
The fear is completely normal.

anhalten, er hält an — to stop ​

Separable, stem-changing like "halten": ich halte an, du hältst an, er/sie hält an.
Lass uns an der Tankstelle anhalten.
Let's stop at the gas station.
anhalten = to stop (separable: hält … an) · die Tankstelle = gas station. After "lass uns," the infinitive "anhalten" stays together at the end of the clause.

per Anhalter reisen — to hitchhike ​

Literally "to travel by hitchhiker" — der Anhalter is a hitchhiker (from anhalten, "to stop [a car]"). Also heard as trampen.
In einem Sommer reiste mein Vater per Anhalter durch Frankreich.
One summer my father hitchhiked through France.
reisen = to travel · per Anhalter = by hitchhiking · durch = through (+ Akkusativ). Past tense "reiste" (regular weak verb).

ankommen — to arrive; to come ​

Separable verb: ich komme an, du kommst an, er/sie kommt an. Takes "sein" in the Perfekt: ich bin angekommen.
Der Zug kommt um acht Uhr an.
The train arrives at eight o'clock.
ankommen = to arrive (separable: kommt … an) · der Zug = train · um acht Uhr = at eight o'clock.
