Vocab: Travel — B2

Travel vocabulary at B2 level.

Maskulin Feminin Neutrum Plural

der Perron — railway platform (Swiss and Austrian German)

der Perron is a regional word, especially in Switzerland and Austria. In much of Germany, the usual word is der Bahnsteig; the plural is die Perrons.
Der Perron ist heute sehr voll.
The platform is very crowded today.
voll means crowded or full, and heute means today. Der Perron is nominative because it is the subject; the finite verb ist stands in position two.
Ich suche den Perron für den Zug nach Wien.
I am looking for the platform for the train to Vienna.
suchen means to look for, der Zug means train, and nach Wien means to Vienna. den Perron is accusative because suchen takes a direct object; für also requires the accusative in für den Zug.
Wir warten auf dem Perron auf den Nachtzug.
We are waiting on the platform for the night train.
warten means to wait, and der Nachtzug means night train. dem Perron is dative because auf describes a fixed location here; the verb warten also commonly uses auf with the accusative for the thing awaited.
Die Nummer des Perrons steht auf dem Ticket.
The platform number is on the ticket.
die Nummer means the number, stehen means to be written or displayed, and das Ticket means ticket. des Perrons is genitive because it specifies which number; masculine genitive uses des and adds -s to the noun.
Die drei Perrons liegen nebeneinander.
The three platforms are next to one another.
drei means three, and nebeneinander means next to one another. Perrons is the plural subject, so the finite verb is liegen, the plural of liegt.

die Verpflegung — catering; food provision; care; care; provision of food and support

Verpflegung is a mass noun, so it normally has no plural when referring to food or catering in general. It is common in travel, hotel and event contexts, and volle Verpflegung means that meals are included.
Die Verpflegung im Hotel ist ausgezeichnet.
The food and catering at the hotel are excellent.
im Hotel means at the hotel, and ausgezeichnet means excellent. Die Verpflegung is nominative because it is the subject; the finite verb ist stands in position two, and this mass noun normally has no plural here.
Die Reiseleitung organisiert die Verpflegung.
The tour guide organises the catering.
die Reiseleitung is the tour management or tour guide, and organisiert means organises. Die Verpflegung is accusative because it is the direct object of organisiert; its form is identical to the nominative feminine form.
Wir sind mit der Verpflegung sehr zufrieden.
We are very satisfied with the catering.
sehr zufrieden means very satisfied, and mit means with. Mit always takes the dative, so der Verpflegung is dative; sind stands in position two and zufrieden remains at the end of the clause.
Die Qualität der Verpflegung war besser als erwartet.
The quality of the catering was better than expected.
die Qualität means the quality, and besser als erwartet means better than expected. Der Verpflegung is genitive because it identifies whose quality is meant; the finite verb war stands in position two.
Die Verpflegung der Verletzten hat Priorität.
Caring for the injured has priority.
die Verletzten means the injured people, and Priorität means priority. Der Verletzten is genitive after the noun Verpflegung to show whose care is meant; the finite verb hat stands in position two.
Für die Verpflegung der Kinder ist gesorgt.
The children's food and care have been taken care of.
für means for, der Kinder means of the children, and ist gesorgt means has been taken care of. Für die Verpflegung is accusative because für requires it, while der Kinder is genitive; the fixed expression ist gesorgt places gesorgt at the end.

verzollen — to declare goods for customs

Verzollen is used for goods that must be declared to customs; it is more specific than anmelden, to register or declare generally. The person declares etwas in the accusative, for example die Waren.
Der Reisende verzollt seine Waren am Flughafen.
The traveller declares his goods at the airport.
der Reisende means the traveller, seine Waren means his goods, and der Flughafen means the airport. The finite verb verzollt is in position two; seine Waren is accusative because verzollen takes the goods as its direct object, while am Flughafen gives the location.
Wir haben die Geschenke beim Zoll verzollt.
We declared the presents at customs.
die Geschenke means the presents, and beim Zoll means at customs. The perfect uses haben plus verzollt at the end; die Geschenke is the accusative object.
Sie verzollte das teure Gerät sofort.
She declared the expensive device immediately.
das teure Gerät means the expensive device, and sofort means immediately. The weak past form verzollte stands in position two, and das teure Gerät is accusative as the direct object.
Verzolle den Computer am Schalter.
Declare the computer at the counter.
der Computer means the computer, and der Schalter means the counter or desk. The imperative Verzolle starts the sentence, and den Computer is accusative because it is the object.
Er würde die Kamera nicht verzollen.
He would not declare the camera for customs.
die Kamera means the camera, and nicht means not. The conditional uses würde with the infinitive verzollen at the end; die Kamera is accusative.
Ihr werdet die Waren bei der Einreise verzollen.
You will declare the goods when entering the country.
ihr means you plural, die Waren means the goods, and bei der Einreise means when entering the country. Werdet is in position two and the infinitive verzollen goes to the end; die Waren is the accusative object.
