At a Party

Breaking the ice with someone you've just met.

At a party among younger people, everyone uses du straight away — using "Sie" here would sound stiff. These are the phrases for meeting someone and keeping the chat going.

Meeting someone new

Informal (du) — introducing yourself.
Lena
Hi, ich bin Lena. Wie heißt du?
Hi, I'm Lena. What's your name?
Tom
Ich heiße Tom. Freut mich!
I'm Tom. Nice to meet you!
Lena
Woher kommst du, Tom?
Where are you from, Tom?
Tom
Ich komme aus Spanien. Und du?
I'm from Spain. And you?
Lena
Ich bin aus München. Wie gefällt dir die Party?
I'm from Munich. How do you like the party?
Good to know: Freut mich! (short for "Es freut mich, dich kennenzulernen") is "nice to meet you." Ask where someone is from with Woher kommst du? and answer with Ich komme aus … (aus + Dativ).

Offering a drink

Informal (du) — being a good host.
Lena
Möchtest du etwas trinken?
Would you like something to drink?
Tom
Ja, gern. Was gibt es?
Yes, please. What is there?
Lena
Es gibt Cola, Saft oder Bier.
There's cola, juice, or beer.
Tom
Ein Bier, bitte. Danke!
A beer, please. Thanks!
Lena
Prost!
Cheers!
Good to know: Ja, gern (yes, gladly) is the warm way to accept; to decline politely say Nein, danke. Es gibt … (there is / there are) always takes the Akkusativ. Raise your glass with Prost! — and look people in the eye while you do.
