Maskulin Feminin Neutrum Plural

Personal pronoun, 3rd person singular masculine, Nominativ only. Accusative "him" is ihn, Dativ "him/to him" is ihm — separate entries. "Er" replaces a maskulin noun or person already mentioned.

zufrieden mit = satisfied with. Plural Dativ: the article is "den"; Ernten already ends in "-n," so no further change.
erröten — to blush
Regular weak verb: ich erröte, du errötest, er/sie errötet. Built from "rot" (red) — literally "to turn red."
Wenn alle Richard anschauen, errötet er.
When everyone looks at Richard, he blushes.
anschauen = to look at (separable — moves to the clause end after "wenn"). The dictionary's own example.
Sie errötet, wenn er sie anlächelt.
She blushes when he smiles at her.
anlächeln = to smile at (+ Akkusativ). "Wenn" sends the conjugated verb to the end of its own clause.
erschrecken — to scare; to be frightened
Two patterns exist for this verb. Weak and transitive (er erschreckt, erschreckte, hat erschreckt) = to scare/startle someone else. Strong and intransitive (er erschrickt, erschrak, ist erschrocken) = to become frightened/startled oneself.
Der laute Donner erschreckt das Kind.
The loud thunder scares the child.
der Donner = thunder · laut = loud. Weak, transitive form: er/sie/es erschreckt (scares someone).
Ich erschrak, als das Telefon plötzlich klingelte.
I was startled when the phone suddenly rang.
als = when (a single past event) · plötzlich = suddenly · klingeln = to ring. Strong, intransitive form — Präteritum: ich erschrak; Perfekt: ich bin erschrocken.
