German Student Dictionary — Part 79
Dictionary entries, alphabetical: unehrlich – Untergrundbahn.
Maskulin Feminin Neutrum Plural
unehrlich — dishonest
"Un-" is a negating prefix, like English "dis-/un-": ehrlich (honest) → unehrlich (dishonest).
Der unehrliche Junge erzählte noch eine Lüge.
The dishonest boy told another lie.
The dictionary's own example (OCR-fixed: "erzahlte"→"erzählte", "Luge"→"Lüge"). der Junge = boy (weak noun) · erzählen = to tell · die Lüge = lie.
unerwartet — unexpected
From "erwarten" (to expect) + "un-".
Diese Einladung kommt unerwartet.
This invitation is unexpected.
The dictionary's own example. die Einladung = invitation.
ungeduldig — impatient
Opposite of "geduldig" (patient), from "die Geduld" (patience).
Wenn Johann es eilig hat, ist er ungeduldig.
When John is in a hurry, he is impatient.
The dictionary's own example (OCR-fixed: "1st"→"ist"). es eilig haben = to be in a hurry.
ungeschickt — awkward; clumsy
Opposite of "geschickt" (skillful, deft).
Das Baby machte seine ersten ungeschickten Schritte.
The baby took its first awkward steps.
The dictionary's own example. der Schritt = step.
ungewöhnlich — unusual
Opposite of "gewöhnlich" (usual, ordinary), from "die Gewohnheit" (habit).
Knoblauch ist eine ungewöhnliche Geschmackssorte für Eis.
Garlic is an unusual flavor for ice cream.
The dictionary's own example (OCR-fixed stripped umlauts throughout). der Knoblauch = garlic · die Geschmackssorte = flavor.
ungezogen — naughty
From the old sense of "ziehen" meaning "to raise/bring up" (compare "aufziehen", modern "erziehen") — an "ungezogenes" child is one poorly brought up, i.e. naughty.
Dieser kleine Junge ist manchmal ungezogen.
This little boy is naughty sometimes.
The dictionary's own example. der Junge = boy (weak noun) · manchmal = sometimes.
das Unglück — disaster
Plural: die Unglücke. Also means "bad luck/misfortune" in an uncountable sense (like "das Pech") — this drill treats it as the countable "accident/disaster" sense, matching the dictionary's own example.
Nom Das Unglück passierte gestern.
The disaster happened yesterday.
das Unglück (neutrum) = disaster · passieren = to happen. "Das" — neutrum Nominativ.
Akk Wir bedauern das Unglück.
We regret the disaster.
bedauern = to regret. "Das" — neutrum Akkusativ, unchanged.
Dat Nach dem Unglück kam Hilfe.
After the disaster, help came.
nach = after (always Dativ) · die Hilfe = help. "Dem" because neutrum Dativ (das → dem).
Nom Der Flugzeugabsturz war ein großes Unglück.
The plane crash was a great disaster.
The dictionary's own example (OCR-fixed: "groBes"→"großes", "Ungluck"→"Unglück"). der Flugzeugabsturz = plane crash. "War" (from "sein") takes a predicate nominative, not an Akkusativ object — so "ein großes Unglück" is Nominativ here, matching "der Flugzeugabsturz".
Akk Die Stadt erlebt ein Unglück.
The city experiences a disaster.
die Stadt = city · erleben = to experience. "Ein" — neutrum Akkusativ indefinite, unchanged.
Dat Nach den Unglücken der letzten Jahre änderte die Firma die Regeln.
After the disasters of recent years, the company changed the rules.
die Firma = company · die Regel = rule. Plural Dativ: article "den"; Unglück adds -n → Unglücken.
unglücklich — unhappy
Opposite of "glücklich" (happy), from "das Glück" (luck/happiness).
Sie ist unglücklich, wenn sie allein ist.
She is unhappy when she is alone.
The dictionary's own example (OCR-fixed: "unglucklich"→"unglücklich"). allein = alone.
unhöflich — impolite
Opposite of "höflich" (polite).
Es war unhöflich, mich deinem Freund nicht vorzustellen.
It was impolite not to introduce me to your friend.
The dictionary's own example (rejoined across two source lines; OCR-fixed: "unhoflich"→"unhöflich"). vorstellen = to introduce (separable).
die Universität — university

Nom Die Universität ist bekannt.
The university is well known.
die Universität (feminin) = university · bekannt = well known. "Die" — feminin Nominativ.
Akk Ich besuche die Universität.
I attend the university.
besuchen = to attend/visit. "Die" stays "die" in Akkusativ.
Dat Der Professor arbeitet an der Universität.
The professor works at the university.
der Professor = professor · arbeiten an = to work at (+ Dativ for location, no motion). "Der" because feminin Dativ (die → der).
Nom Eine neue Universität eröffnet nächstes Jahr.

eröffnen = to open · nächstes Jahr = next year. "Eine" — no ending before feminin Nominativ.
Akk In meiner Heimatstadt gibt es eine Universität.

Dat Viele Studenten lernen an den Universitäten in Berlin.
Many students study at the universities in Berlin.
der Student = student (weak noun) · lernen an = to study at (+ Dativ, no motion). Plural Dativ: article "den"; Universität adds -en → Universitäten (already ends in -en, unchanged further).
uns — us
1st-person plural personal pronoun. Unlike nouns, "uns" is identical for both Akkusativ and Dativ ("Er sieht uns" = He sees us; "Er hilft uns" = He helps us) — no separate form to memorize.
Dieses Geschenk ist für uns beide.
This present is for both of us.
The dictionary's own example (OCR-fixed a stripped umlaut). das Geschenk = present · für = for (+ Akkusativ) · beide = both.
unschuldig — innocent

Obwohl sie unschuldig ist, wurde sie bestraft.
She was punished, even though she is innocent.
The dictionary's own example. obwohl = even though · bestrafen = to punish.
unser, -e, -es — our
Possessive adjective, declining like "ein/kein/mein": masculine Nom "unser" → Akk "unseren" → Dat "unserem"; feminine Nom/Akk "unsere" → Dat "unserer"; neuter Nom/Akk "unser" → Dat "unserem"; plural Nom/Akk "unsere" → Dat "unseren".
Das ist unser Haus neben dem Park.
That's our house next to the park.
The dictionary's own example. das Haus = house · neben = next to. "Unser" — no ending before neutrum Nominativ (das Haus), same pattern as "ein".
unten — down; below
"Da unten" = down there. Distinguish from "unter" (below, the two-way preposition) — "unten" is a plain adverb, never followed by a noun.
Unten steht ein Mann und spielt Gitarre.
There's a man down there, playing guitar.
The dictionary's own example. stehen = to stand · die Gitarre = guitar.
unter — below; beneath; under
A two-way preposition: Dativ for a static location ("where?"), Akkusativ for motion into a new position ("where to?"). No `case` drilling on these lightweight examples — but compare the two sentences below to see the contrast.
Die Geschäfte befinden sich unter den Wohnungen.
The stores are located below the apartments.
The dictionary's own example (OCR-fixed: "Geschafte"→"Geschäfte"). sich befinden = to be located · die Wohnung = apartment. Static location — "unter" governs Dativ here: "den Wohnungen" (plural Dativ).
Der Hund läuft unter den Tisch.
The dog runs under the table.
der Hund = dog · laufen = to run · der Tisch = table. Motion into a new position — "unter" governs Akkusativ here: "den Tisch" (maskulin Akkusativ), not Dativ "dem Tisch".
unterbrechen — to interrupt
Inseparable, stem-changing verb (e → i, like "sprechen"): ich unterbreche, du unterbrichst, er/sie unterbricht, wir unterbrechen, ihr unterbrecht, sie unterbrechen. (The source's own conjugation list was badly OCR-scrambled — this is the correct paradigm.)
Er unterbricht immer unsere Unterhaltungen.
He always interrupts our conversations.
The dictionary's own example. immer = always · die Unterhaltung = conversation.
die Untergrundbahn — subway
Plural: die Untergrundbahnen. Almost always shortened to "die U-Bahn" (plural: die U-Bahnen) in everyday speech — the source entry gives this abbreviation in parentheses. Literally "underground railway". No example sentence survived in the source chunk (it was cut off), so all six below are freshly written.
Nom Die Untergrundbahn ist pünktlich.
The subway is on time.
die Untergrundbahn (feminin) = subway · pünktlich = on time. "Die" — feminin Nominativ.
Akk Ich nehme die Untergrundbahn.
I take the subway.

Dat Wir fahren mit der Untergrundbahn.
We travel by subway.
