German Student Dictionary — Part 5
Dictionary entries, alphabetical: Atlantik – aussprechen.
Maskulin Feminin Neutrum Plural
der Atlantik — the Atlantic (Ocean)
A unique proper noun — there's only one Atlantic, so (unlike most nouns) it has no plural and rarely takes an indefinite article. The dictionary's own example uses a case not drilled here: "Ich wohne in der Nähe des Atlantiks" (I live near the Atlantic) — Genitiv, formed by adding -s.
Nom Der Atlantik ist riesig.
The Atlantic is huge.
der Atlantik (maskulin) = the Atlantic (Ocean) · riesig = huge/enormous. "Der" — maskulin Nominativ; Atlantik is the subject.
Akk Man überquert den Atlantik in fünf Tagen.
You cross the Atlantic in five days.
überqueren = to cross · in fünf Tagen = in five days. "Den" because maskulin Akkusativ (der → den); Atlantik is the direct object.
Dat Das Schiff fährt auf dem Atlantik.
The ship is sailing on the Atlantic.
das Schiff = ship · fahren = to travel/sail. "Auf" + Dativ here describes a fixed location (on the ocean's surface), not movement onto it. "Dem" — maskulin Dativ (der → dem).
auch — also / too
Placed right after the word it emphasizes — after the verb to add a whole new fact ("auch die Studenten kennenlernen"), or after the subject to say that person, too, is included ("Monika möchte auch kommen").
Ich möchte auch die neuen Studenten kennenlernen.
I also want to meet the new students.
möchten = would like to · kennenlernen = to get to know/meet (separable). "Auch" adds a further wish here.
Monika möchte auch kommen.
Monica wants to come, too.
kommen = to come. "Auch" signals that Monika, in addition to others already mentioned, wants to come.
auf — on / up (preposition, + Dativ or Akkusativ)
A two-way preposition: Akkusativ for movement onto something ("wohin?"), Dativ for a fixed position on top of it ("wo?"). The fixed phrase "Auf Wiedersehen!" (built from this same "auf") gets its own entry just below.
Er stellte seine Bücher auf den Schreibtisch.
He put his books on the desk.
stellen = to put/place (upright) · der Schreibtisch = desk. "Auf" + Akkusativ here — movement onto the desk's surface (wohin?).
Die Bücher liegen auf dem Schreibtisch.
The books are lying on the desk.
liegen = to lie/be positioned. "Auf" + Dativ here — a fixed location, no movement (wo?).
Auf Wiedersehen! — Goodbye! (formal)
Literally "until we see each other again" — built from "auf" + "das Wiedersehen" (the reunion). The standard formal goodbye, used with strangers and in professional settings; "Tschüs" is the casual equivalent.
Auf Wiedersehen! Bis zum nächsten Mal.
Goodbye! Until next time.
bis zum nächsten Mal = until next time. A formal parting phrase, typically said with a handshake.
