Maskulin Feminin Neutrum Plural

ankündigen, er kündigt an — to announce ​

Separable verb: ich kündige an, du kündigst an, er/sie kündigt an. Often used for official or planned announcements — a new law, a trip, a decision — while "sagen" covers everyday statements.
Sollten wir deinen Eltern unsere Pläne ankündigen?
Should we announce our plans to your parents?
sollen = should (modal) · die Eltern = parents · der Plan = plan. After the modal "sollten," the separable verb stays together as the infinitive at the end.
Die Regierung kündigt neue Regeln an.
The government announces new rules.
die Regierung = government · die Regel = rule · neu = new. "Kündigt ... an" — er/sie-form in a main clause, so the prefix "an" jumps to the end.

die Ankunft — arrival ​

Plural: die Ankünfte. Pairs with "die Abfahrt" (departure) — you'll see both words on station and airport boards.
Nom Die Ankunft verspätet sich um zehn Minuten.
The arrival is delayed by ten minutes.
die Ankunft (feminin) = arrival · sich verspäten = to be delayed · die Minute = minute. "Die" — feminin Nominativ. Ankunft is the subject.
Akk Wir erwarten die Ankunft des Flugzeugs.
We are waiting for the plane's arrival.

die Anrichte — dresser; sideboard ​

Plural: die Anrichten. A dining-room piece for serving and storing dishes — not the same as "der Schrank" (a general cupboard/wardrobe).
Nom Die Anrichte hat vier Schubladen.
The dresser has four drawers.

sich ansehen, er sieht sich an — to look at / to watch ​

Reflexive + separable: sich (Dativ) etwas ansehen. Present tense: ich sehe mir an, du siehst dir an, er/sie sieht sich an. Common in everyday speech for "to check out" or "to watch" something.
Sie sehen sich die Bilder an.
They're looking at the pictures.
ansehen = to look at (separable: sehen...an) · das Bild = picture. "Sich" (Dativ reflexive) shows they're looking at something for themselves.
Wir sehen uns eine neue Show im Fernsehen an.
We are watching a new show on T.V.
uns = ourselves (Dativ reflexive, wir-form) · das Fernsehen = television. "An" moves to the end — the reflexive pronoun stays in place right after the verb.

anstatt — instead of ​

Marked as an adverb in this dictionary, though it most often works as a preposition/conjunction meaning "instead of" — usually paired with a zu-infinitive, as in the example below.
Anstatt den Zug zu nehmen, fliegen wir.
Instead of taking the train, we'll fly.
anstatt = instead of · der Zug = train · nehmen = to take · fliegen = to fly. "Anstatt + zu-infinitive" contrasts one action with the one actually chosen.

antworten — to reply ​

Regular verb: ich antworte, du antwortest, er/sie antwortet, wir antworten, ihr antwortet, sie antworten. Governs "auf" + Akkusativ for the thing you're replying to: antworten auf + Akk.
Ich antworte immer auf seine Briefe.
I always reply to his letters.
antworten auf = to reply to (+ Akkusativ) · der Brief = letter · immer = always. "Antworte" — ich-form, regular -e ending.
Antwortest du schon auf die E-Mail?
Are you already replying to the email?
schon = already · die E-Mail = email. "Antwortest" — du-form (stem "antwort-" + "-est," an extra -e- because the stem ends in -t).

die Antwort — answer ​

Plural: die Antworten. The noun that pairs with the verb "antworten" — but note the noun itself also takes "auf" + Akkusativ: die Antwort auf eine Frage (the answer to a question).
Nom Die Antwort ist ganz einfach.
The answer is quite simple.
die Antwort (feminin) = answer · einfach = simple. "Die" — feminin Nominativ. Antwort is the subject.
Akk Ich weiß die Antwort nicht.
I don't know the answer.
wissen = to know (facts). "Die" stays "die" — feminin Akkusativ. Antwort is the direct object.

die Anzeige — advertisement ​

Plural: die Anzeigen — often seen this way for classified ads: "Es gibt viele Anzeigen in der Zeitschrift" (There are a lot of advertisements in this magazine). "Anzeige" can also mean "announcement" or "notice" — see "anzeigen" below.
Nom Die Anzeige steht auf Seite drei.
The advertisement is on page three.

anzeigen, er zeigt an — to announce ​

Separable verb: ich zeige an, du zeigst an, er/sie zeigt an. As a noun, "die Anzeige" built from this verb can mean "announcement" or "notice" (in addition to "advertisement" — see "die Anzeige" above).
Wir zeigen unsere Verlobung an.
We're announcing our engagement.
anzeigen = to announce (separable: zeigen...an) · die Verlobung = engagement. "An" moves to the end of the main clause.
Die Firma zeigt die neue Adresse an.
The company announces the new address.

anziehen, er zieht an — to attract ​

Also reflexive "sich anziehen" = to get dressed, and "etwas anziehen" = to put something on (clothes) — three related meanings of the same separable verb, all built on "ziehen" (to pull).
Zucker zieht Fliegen an.
Sugar attracts flies.
anziehen = to attract (separable: zieht...an) · der Zucker = sugar · die Fliege = fly. "Zieht ... an" — er/sie/es-form, prefix at the end.
Das Kind zieht sich schnell an.
The child gets dressed quickly.
sich anziehen = to get dressed (reflexive) · schnell = quickly. The reflexive pronoun "sich" sits before "an" at the end of the clause.

der Anzug — suit ​

Plural: die Anzüge. A full suit (jacket + trousers); for the jacket alone, use "die Jacke" or "das Sakko."
Nom Der Anzug passt perfekt.
The suit fits perfectly.

der Apfel — apple ​

Plural: die Äpfel (umlaut). The compound "der Apfelkuchen" (apple cake/pie) is one of the most common German desserts.
Nom Der Apfel schmeckt süß.
The apple tastes sweet.
der Apfel (maskulin) = apple · schmecken = to taste · süß = sweet. "Der" — maskulin Nominativ. Apfel is the subject.
Akk Das Kind isst den Apfel ganz auf.
The child eats the whole apple.

die Apotheke — drugstore; pharmacy ​

Plural: die Apotheken. Not the same as "die Drogerie" — the Apotheke sells prescription and over-the-counter medicine, while a Drogerie sells toiletries and cosmetics.
Nom Die Apotheke hat heute bis 20 Uhr geöffnet.
The pharmacy is open until 8pm today.
die Apotheke (feminin) = drugstore/pharmacy · öffnen = to open · heute = today. "Die" — feminin Nominativ. Apotheke is the subject.

der Apotheker — pharmacist ​

Feminine form: die Apothekerin. Plural: die Apotheker (die Apothekerinnen for women). Not a weak noun — a regular masculine -er agent noun, so no case endings in the singular.
Nom Der Apotheker berät die Kunden.
The pharmacist advises the customers.

das Appartement — apartment ​

Plural: die Appartements (French-style -s plural, like other loanwords from French). A smaller, often furnished unit — "die Wohnung" is the broader everyday word for apartment.
Nom Das Appartement liegt im dritten Stock.
The apartment is on the third floor.
das Appartement (neutrum) = apartment · liegen = to be located · der Stock = floor/storey. "Das" — neutrum Nominativ. Appartement is the subject.
Akk Wir mieten das Appartement für einen Monat.
We're renting the apartment for a month.

das Appartementgebäude — apartment building ​

Plural: die Appartementgebäude (unchanged) — but the Dativ plural still adds -n: den Appartementgebäuden. A compound of "das Appartement" + "das Gebäude" (building) — the whole building, not a single unit.
Nom Das Appartementgebäude hat zwölf Stockwerke.
The apartment building has twelve floors.

der Appetit — appetite ​

Often used without an article in set phrases: "Ich habe Appetit auf ..." (I feel like eating ...), "Guten Appetit!" (Enjoy your meal!) — compare "der Hunger" and "der Durst," which behave the same way. Another authentic example: "Nachdem ich Sport getrieben habe, habe ich großen Appetit" (After I exercise, I have a big appetite).
Nom Der Appetit kommt beim Essen.
The appetite comes while eating (a well-known German saying).
