Arbeit — Work

arbeitslos — unemployed ​

Built from Arbeit (work) + -los (the suffix "-less", like English). Many German words use -los: arbeitslos, kostenlos, sinnlos.
Nom Mein Bruder ist zurzeit arbeitslos.
My brother is currently unemployed.
arbeitslos = unemployed · der Bruder (maskulin) = brother · zurzeit = currently. Predicative adjective after "ist" takes no ending. "Mein Bruder" is maskulin Nominativ — the subject.
Akk Die Firma hat viele arbeitslose Menschen eingestellt.
The company hired many unemployed people.
arbeitslos = unemployed · die Menschen (Plural) = people · einstellen = to hire. Attributive adjective before a plural noun takes -e after "viele": arbeitslose. "Menschen" is the direct object → Akkusativ.
Dat Der Staat hilft den arbeitslosen Leuten.
The state helps the unemployed people.
arbeitslos = unemployed · die Leute (Plural) = people · helfen = to help (takes Dativ). "Den ... -n" because plural Dativ (die → den, noun adds -n): den Leuten. Adjective ending -en in Dativ.

der Arbeitsplatz, Arbeitsplätze — workplace, job position ​

Two meanings: your physical desk/workstation, and "a job" in the sense of employment. Arbeitsplätze schaffen = to create jobs — a common phrase in the news.
Nom Der Arbeitsplatz ist hell und modern.
The workplace is bright and modern.
der Arbeitsplatz (maskulin) = workplace · hell = bright · modern = modern. "Der" — maskulin Nominativ, the subject.
Akk Ich mag meinen Arbeitsplatz sehr.
I really like my workplace.
der Arbeitsplatz (maskulin) = workplace · mögen = to like · sehr = very. "Meinen" because maskulin Akkusativ (mein → meinen). Workplace is the direct object.

die Stelle, -n — position, job (vacancy) ​

In job-hunting German, eine Stelle is an open position. die Stellenanzeige = job advert. Also means "a spot/place" generally.
Nom Die Stelle ist noch frei.
The position is still open.
die Stelle (feminin) = position · noch = still · frei = free/open. "Die" — feminin Nominativ, the subject.
Akk Sie sucht eine neue Stelle.
She is looking for a new position.
die Stelle (feminin) = position · suchen = to search for · neu = new. "Eine" stays the same in Akkusativ for feminin (die/eine → die/eine). Adjective ending -e. It is the direct object.
Dat Mit dieser Stelle ist er sehr zufrieden.

der Job, -s — job ​

Borrowed from English, so it sounds familiar — but it's maskulin: der Job. Plural adds English-style -s: die Jobs. Casual word; die Stelle is more formal.
Nom Der Job macht mir Spaß.
The job is fun for me.
der Job (maskulin) = job · Spaß machen = to be fun · mir = to me (Dativ pronoun). "Der" — maskulin Nominativ, the subject that does the "making fun".
Akk Ich habe einen neuen Job gefunden.
I found a new job.
der Job (maskulin) = job · finden = to find · neu = new. "Einen neuen" because maskulin Akkusativ (ein → einen, adjective -en). The job is the direct object.

He likes to talk about his job.

der Saison-Job, -s — seasonal job ​

Saison (season, from French, pronounced "seh-zong") + Job. Think summer waiters at the beach or winter helpers at ski resorts and Christmas markets.
Nom Der Saison-Job dauert nur drei Monate.
The seasonal job lasts only three months.
der Saison-Job (maskulin) = seasonal job · dauern = to last · der Monat = month. "Der" — maskulin Nominativ, the subject.
Akk Im Sommer suche ich einen Saison-Job.
In summer I look for a seasonal job.

die Karriere, -n — career ​

French-derived, feminin: die Karriere. Karriere machen = to climb the career ladder. Note the double-r spelling, different from English "career".
Nom Ihre Karriere beginnt in Berlin.
Her career begins in Berlin.
die Karriere (feminin) = career · beginnen = to begin · ihre = her. "Ihre" — feminin Nominativ, the subject.
Akk Er plant seine Karriere genau.
He plans his career carefully.
die Karriere (feminin) = career · planen = to plan · genau = exactly/carefully. "Seine" stays the same in Akkusativ for feminin. The career is the direct object.
Dat Nach ihrer Karriere als Ärztin reist sie viel.

verdienen — to earn ​

Regular verb: ich verdiene, du verdienst, er verdient. Also means "to deserve" — Das hast du verdient! = You deserve that!
Nom Meine Schwester verdient gut.
My sister earns well.
verdienen = to earn · die Schwester (feminin) = sister · gut = well. Conjugation: er/sie verdient. "Meine Schwester" is feminin Nominativ — the subject doing the earning.
Akk Ich verdiene gutes Geld im Kaufhaus.
I earn good money in the department store.
verdienen = to earn · das Geld (neutrum) = money · gut = good. "Geld" is the direct object → Akkusativ. Adjective ending -es (neutrum, no article). ich verdiene.
Dat Mit dieser Arbeit verdient man wenig.

das Projekt, -e — project ​

Neutrum: das Projekt. The "j" is pronounced like English "y". an einem Projekt arbeiten = to work on a project.
Nom Das Projekt ist sehr wichtig.
The project is very important.
das Projekt (neutrum) = project · wichtig = important · sehr = very. "Das" — neutrum Nominativ, the subject.
Akk Wir beginnen das Projekt morgen.
We start the project tomorrow.

die Aufgabe, -n — task, exercise ​

From aufgeben (to give up / assign). In school it means a homework exercise; at work, a task. die Hausaufgabe = homework.
Nom Die Aufgabe ist nicht leicht.
The task is not easy.
die Aufgabe (feminin) = task · leicht = easy · nicht = not. "Die" — feminin Nominativ, the subject.
Akk Ich mache die Aufgabe allein.

die Bewerbung, -en — application (for a job) ​

All nouns ending in -ung are feminin. From sich bewerben = to apply. eine Bewerbung schreiben = to write a job application.
Nom Die Bewerbung muss perfekt sein.
The application has to be perfect.

das Profil, -e — profile ​

Neutrum: das Profil. Your online profile (LinkedIn, Xing) or a personality/qualification profile in a job ad. Stress on the last syllable: pro-FEEL.
Nom Dein Profil sieht gut aus.
Your profile looks good.
das Profil (neutrum) = profile · aussehen = to look/appear · gut = good. "Dein" — neutrum Nominativ, the subject.
Akk Ich aktualisiere mein Profil im Internet.

das Internet — the internet (singular only) ​

Neutrum and always singular: das Internet. Note the fixed phrase im Internet (= in the internet) for "online", not "auf dem".
Nom Das Internet ist heute überall.
The internet is everywhere today.
das Internet (neutrum) = internet · überall = everywhere · heute = today. "Das" — neutrum Nominativ, the subject.
Akk Wir brauchen das Internet für die Arbeit.
We need the internet for work.
das Internet (neutrum) = internet · brauchen = to need · für = for. "Das" stays the same in Akkusativ for neutrum. The internet is the direct object.
Dat Im Internet finde ich viele Jobs.
On the internet I find many jobs.
das Internet (neutrum) = internet · finden = to find · viele = many. "Im" = in + dem, neutrum Dativ after "in" (location). This is the fixed phrase im Internet.

durch — through ​

durch is an Akkusativ preposition — it ALWAYS takes Akkusativ, no exceptions. Memory aid: the "DOGFU" prepositions (durch, ohne, gegen, für, um) all take Akkusativ.
Nom Der Weg führt durch den Park.
The path leads through the park.
durch = through · der Weg (maskulin) = path · führen = to lead. Here "Der Weg" is the Nominativ subject; note "durch den Park" already shows Akkusativ (der → den).
Akk Wir gehen durch die Stadt.
We walk through the city.
durch = through · die Stadt (feminin) = city · gehen = to go. "Die" — feminin Akkusativ (die → die) after durch, which always takes Akkusativ.
Akk Ich habe den Job durch einen Freund gefunden.
I found the job through a friend.
durch = through · der Freund (maskulin) = friend · finden = to find. "Einen" because maskulin Akkusativ (ein → einen) after durch. Here durch means "by means of".

der Feierabend, -e — end of the working day ​

A wonderful German concept: Feier (celebration) + Abend (evening) = the free time after work. Feierabend machen = to knock off work. Schönen Feierabend! = Enjoy your evening off!
Nom Der Feierabend beginnt um 17 Uhr.
The end of the workday begins at 5 p.m.
der Feierabend (maskulin) = after-work time · beginnen = to begin · um = at (time). "Der" — maskulin Nominativ, the subject.
Akk Ich genieße meinen Feierabend auf dem Sofa.
I enjoy my after-work time on the sofa.

Urlaub nehmen — to take vacation ​

Fixed expression: Urlaub (holiday, maskulin) + nehmen (to take). nehmen is irregular: ich nehme, du nimmst, er nimmt. Note German uses machen for a trip but nehmen for taking the days off.
Nom Mein Kollege nimmt im Juli Urlaub.
My colleague takes vacation in July.
Urlaub nehmen = to take vacation · der Kollege (maskulin) = colleague · der Juli = July. "Mein Kollege" is maskulin Nominativ, the subject. Note irregular er nimmt.
Akk Ich nehme nächste Woche einen Tag Urlaub.
I am taking a day off next week.
Urlaub nehmen = to take vacation · der Tag (maskulin) = day · die Woche = week. "Einen Tag" is the direct object → maskulin Akkusativ (ein → einen). ich nehme.

Berufe — Professions

der Händler, - — dealer, trader (male) ​

From handeln (to trade). Nouns ending in -er for a doer are usually maskulin and keep the same form in the plural (die Händler). der Gemüsehändler = greengrocer.
Nom Der Händler verkauft frisches Obst.
The dealer sells fresh fruit.
der Händler (maskulin) = dealer · verkaufen = to sell · das Obst = fruit. "Der" — maskulin Nominativ, the subject.
Akk Ich kenne den Händler vom Markt.
I know the dealer from the market.
der Händler (maskulin) = dealer · kennen = to know (a person) · der Markt = market. "Den" because maskulin Akkusativ (der → den). The dealer is the direct object.
Dat Ich kaufe die Äpfel bei dem Händler.
I buy the apples from the dealer.

die Händlerin, -nen — dealer, trader (female) ​

Add -in to make the female form; plural doubles the n: -innen. This -in pattern works for almost every profession in German.
Nom Die Händlerin ist sehr freundlich.
The (female) dealer is very friendly.
die Händlerin (feminin) = female dealer · freundlich = friendly · sehr = very. "Die" — feminin Nominativ, the subject.
Akk Ich frage die Händlerin nach dem Preis.

verkaufen — to sell ​

Regular verb; opposite of kaufen (to buy). The ver- prefix often flips or completes a meaning. Zu verkaufen = "For sale".
Nom Der Chef verkauft das alte Auto.
The boss sells the old car.
verkaufen = to sell · der Chef (maskulin) = boss · das Auto = car. "Der Chef" is the maskulin Nominativ subject. Conjugation: er verkauft.
Akk Wir verkaufen die Wohnung.
We are selling the apartment.
verkaufen = to sell · die Wohnung (feminin) = apartment. "Die" — feminin Akkusativ, the direct object (the thing being sold). wir verkaufen.
Dat Ich verkaufe meiner Nachbarin das Fahrrad.
I sell the bicycle to my neighbour.

die Ware, -n — goods, merchandise ​

Feminin: die Ware. Often used in the plural die Waren for "wares/goods". Related: das Warenhaus = department store (goods-house).
Nom Die Ware kommt morgen an.
The goods arrive tomorrow.
die Ware (feminin) = goods · ankommen = to arrive · morgen = tomorrow. "Die" — feminin Nominativ, the subject.
Akk Der Händler zeigt die Ware im Schaufenster.
The dealer shows the goods in the shop window.

der Künstler, - — artist (male) ​

From die Kunst (art). The umlaut ü changes the vowel. Plural is identical: die Künstler. Covers painters, musicians, all creatives.
Nom Der Künstler wohnt in Berlin.
The artist lives in Berlin.
der Künstler (maskulin) = artist · wohnen = to live/reside. "Der" — maskulin Nominativ, the subject.
Akk Ich treffe den Künstler im Café.
I meet the artist in the café.
der Künstler (maskulin) = artist · treffen = to meet · das Café = café. "Den" because maskulin Akkusativ (der → den). The artist is the direct object.
Dat Von dem Künstler habe ich ein Bild.
I have a picture by the artist.

die Künstlerin, -nen — artist (female) ​

Female form with -in. Note the ü is kept from the male form. Sie ist eine bekannte Künstlerin = She is a well-known artist.
Nom Die Künstlerin malt jeden Tag.
The (female) artist paints every day.
die Künstlerin (feminin) = female artist · malen = to paint · jeden Tag = every day. "Die" — feminin Nominativ, the subject.
Akk Wir besuchen die Künstlerin in ihrem Atelier.
We visit the artist in her studio.

malen — to paint (pictures) ​

Use malen for painting art/pictures. For painting a wall, Germans say streichen. Regular verb: ich male, du malst, er malt.
Nom Das Kind malt gern.
The child likes to paint.
malen = to paint · das Kind (neutrum) = child · gern = gladly. "Das Kind" is neutrum Nominativ, the subject. Conjugation: es malt.
Akk Sie malt ein schönes Bild.
She paints a beautiful picture.

der Professor, -en — professor (male) ​

Watch the stress shift: singular Pro-FES-sor, plural Profes-SOR-en. Address him as Herr Professor in formal German.
Nom Der Professor hält heute einen Vortrag.
The professor gives a lecture today.
der Professor (maskulin) = professor · halten = to hold/give · der Vortrag = lecture. "Der" — maskulin Nominativ, the subject.
Akk Die Studenten mögen den Professor.
The students like the professor.

die Professorin, -nen — professor (female) ​

Female form with -in. Address her as Frau Professorin or simply Frau + surname. Very common in German universities.
Nom Die Professorin forscht über Physik.
The (female) professor does research on physics.

Akk Wir treffen die Professorin nach dem Unterricht.

der Segellehrer, - — sailing instructor (male) ​

Compound: Segel (sail) + Lehrer (teacher). A typical summer Saison-Job on the coast or lakes. Plural stays die Segellehrer.
Nom Der Segellehrer arbeitet nur im Sommer.
The sailing instructor works only in summer.
der Segellehrer (maskulin) = sailing instructor · arbeiten = to work · der Sommer = summer. "Der" — maskulin Nominativ, the subject.
Akk Ich bezahle den Segellehrer pro Stunde.
I pay the sailing instructor per hour.

segeln — to sail ​

Regular verb, but note it drops an e: ich segle (not "segele" in speech), du segelst, er segelt. Uses sein for movement in the perfect: ich bin gesegelt.
Nom Meine Familie segelt gern.
My family likes to sail.
segeln = to sail · die Familie (feminin) = family · gern = gladly. "Meine Familie" is feminin Nominativ, the subject. Conjugation: sie segelt.
Akk Er segelt jede Woche auf dem See.
He sails every week on the lake.
segeln = to sail · die Woche (feminin) = week. "Jede Woche" is an Akkusativ time expression (duration/frequency uses Akkusativ). er segelt.
Dat Auf dem Meer segeln wir am liebsten.
We sail most gladly on the sea.

der Sekretär, -e — secretary (male) ​

Stress on the last syllable: Sekre-TÄR. The ä gives an "eh" sound. Female form is die Sekretärin (next entry).
Nom Der Sekretär schreibt viele E-Mails.
The secretary writes many emails.
der Sekretär (maskulin) = secretary · schreiben = to write · die E-Mail = email. "Der" — maskulin Nominativ, the subject.
Akk Ich rufe den Sekretär an.
I call the secretary.

die Sekretärin, -nen — secretary (female) ​

The -in female form. Historically the more common form of this job. die Chefsekretärin = executive secretary.
Nom Die Sekretärin organisiert die Termine.
The (female) secretary organises the appointments.
die Sekretärin (feminin) = female secretary · organisieren = to organise · der Termin = appointment. "Die" — feminin Nominativ, the subject.

betreuen — to look after, to supervise ​

From treu (loyal/faithful). Used for caring for people (children, guests, clients) or supervising a project. Regular verb: ich betreue, er betreut.
